Halloween Party October 22nd!

October 3, 2010

The Halloween party at the Y is October 22nd from 6-8pm.  We will be having pizza, milk, cider, apples, other goodies donated from local restaurants and vendors.  We will be having games in the gym for all ages.  We will have our big haunted maze upstairs in the aerobics room.  While that is all going on we will have a room for crafts for the little youngsters ( 2yr olds-6yr olds).  We will be having a costume contest as well.  Candy will be given out throughout the night along with prizes for the most creative costumes.  We had over 350 people here last year and would love to increast that number and make it an even more enjoyable event.

If you are interested in making this event the best please contact Michael Pugh – Program Director- 216.521-8400 or mpugh@clevelandymca.org

The YMCA needs help with candy donations, costume contest judges, and volunteers to help with the day.  Thanks!

Trinity Lutheran Partners with Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry as Health Education and Advocacy Outlet

October 3, 2010

Funded by a grant from the St. Luke’s Foundation and the Cleveland Department of Public Health, Trinity was recently chosen as one of seven congregations throughout greater Cleveland to be a Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry Faith Health Hub. Recognizing that the healing ministry is an integrative part of the church and the ministry of Christ, each LMM Faith Health Hub will serve as a community center providing education, screenings, advocacy, and resource referral regarding a variety of health issues. Katie Stadler, RN, will serve as Trinity’s Health Hub Coordinator and Health Educator. This designation is part of Trinity Lakewood Community Outreach (TLCO), whose work also includes three free community meals per month, an on-site organic vegetable garden providing produce and education, and an annual backpack project for area students in need.

The initial focus of the project is awareness and prevention of childhood lead poisoning utilizing the Cleveland Department of Public Health “Lead Safe Living Campaign” curriculum. Cleveland and its older suburbs have consistently ranked at the top of the list of American cities in incidence of lead poisoning, and, in 2007, reported rates three times higher than the national average. Lakewood is considered a high-risk area for childhood lead poisoning due to its older housing stock, number of rental properties, and poverty rates. The effects of childhood lead poisoning can be devastating for individuals, families, and communities, and include learning difficulties, behavioral problems, nervous system damage, and kidney damage, among others. Children between the ages of 0 and 6 have the highest risk.

Free workshops, “Lead 101: The Basics of Childhood Lead Poisoning”, are available.  All Health Hub programs are free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged, but not required. Please call (216) 226-8087 if you are interested in hosting a subsequent free workshop at your venue.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Health also provides community education, screening for children and case management for families through the Ohio Attorney General Grant.
