Collaborative Meeting Minutes

Our Mission:

“The Lakewood Family Collaborative is a group of agencies, organizations and concerned individuals working together to make sure a network of services and supports are available and accessible to children, youth and families.”

 

Program Year 2011-2012 Focus:

“Strengthening the connections between all who live, work and play in our Lakewood”

Goals:  1. Increase membership and awareness within the Lakewood community.

2. Motivate members to participate in Collaborative activities.

3. Educate members on how to connect and reach out amongst each other for information, ideas and general support.

 

Welcome – Bruce Chamberlin welcomed everyone.

 

Introductions – Introductions were made via the Acronym Game.

 

Spotlight and Discussion – Shelly Napolitan, Lakewood Community Services Center (LCSC)  

LCSC has been serving the community by providing basic needs assistance since 1982.  LCSC served over 7,000 individuals in 2011, and the number of persons needing assistance has increased annually each of the last four years.  Four areas of assistance that LCSC provides are:

1) Emergency Food Assistance – (food pantry, delivery to seniors, free farmers market, community garden, coordination of Lakewood Community Meals)

2) Homeless Prevention / Housing – point of access for residents who qualify for rent/utility assistance

3) Referral & Linkage to other agencies/resources

4) No Cost Onsite Support – (legal assistance w/civil matters, tenant/landlord issue resolution, food stamp applications)

The HOUSEWARMING Program provides:
Conservation measures that are designed to promote energy efficiency including:
• A safety inspection of the home
• Possible furnace tune-up/repair
• Insulation measures in the attic and sidewalls
• A carbon monoxide alarm
• Furnace/boiler replacements may also be available
• Energy saving education and materials to help sustain ongoing energy conservation

Collaborative Spotlight & Discussion

December Spotlight, Leah Brow from the Ohio Benefit Bank through the Cleveland Foodbank

  • Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB) is an online service through the Ohio Association of the Second Harvest Foodbank where folks can conveniently apply and see if they are eligible for Health & Human Services benefits
  • There are trained OBB counselor located throughout multiple locations county-wide who are ready to assist any individual who may be seeking assistance (1,300 locations across Ohio)
  • OBB is a free service that offers: 1) An eligibility indicator; 2) An application completion tool; 3) Free tax assistance program; and 4) Educational outreach program to help raise awareness of available supports
  • Also located on the OBB website is a locator tool so any individual can determine the closest location where a trained counselor  is housed
  • Any individual can access the OBB website their selves, they do not need the assistance of a counselor initially
  • It is strongly recommended for any user to first determine eligibility for benefits by completing the “Quick Check’, which takes no longer than 5 minutes to complete.  This service will determine level of eligibility for the potential user.
  • NOTE: Currently, the only available Lakewood Benefit Bank is located at Trinity Church (who also has a food pantry available)

Announcements/Upcoming Events/Etc.

1)      Employment & Family Services of Cuyahoga County

  • EFS now has an electronic child care system – a swiping method for the voucher program which tracks a child’s attendance and guardian’s payment schedule
  • There was a question raised about the length of time between voucher application and notification and it seems that the lengthiness is a statewide concern.  Any questions, contact Verlinda Moore directly

 

2)      Lakewood Police Department

  • The 2012 Citizens Academy is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 1st
  • This is a 12 week program, scheduled for every Wednesday from 7:00pm-9:00pm and it is free

 

3)      Berea Children’s Home and Family Services

  • Berea is currently seeking foster parents and they are going to be hosting regular Foster Parent Meet & Mingles; the first is scheduled for December 20th at 5:00pm and will be at the downtown location

 

4)      The Hospice of the Western Reserve

  • The Hospice of the Western Reserve is a newer member to the Collaborative, and it is important to note that they do have a Lakewood office on Detroit Road
  • The purpose of the Hospice of WR community outreach staff is to reach out to various agencies county-wide and across northeast Ohio to educate everyone around the various benefits and programs the Hospice has to offer
  • NOTE: In June of 2012 a new Hospice House (32 bed facility) will be opening in Westlake, Ohio

  • A Spotlight survey is requested to be completed, where Collaborative members can share ideas/topics/etc. of spotlights that they would like to see in the future months

  • Caprice Holloway from PNC Bank will be taking on the role as Chair to this committee and she is currently seeking volunteers to help her out

 

3)      School Supplies

  • There will be a meeting in January to begin gearing up for the second half of the current school year, as well as to begin to plan for the following school year
  • Jammy Buggars donated $100 toward the School Supplies “Flash Drive Fund”.  Thanks Jammy Buggars!!!
  • NOTE: There is always a box located at the Lakewood Recreation Department for folks to drop off any school supplies throughout the year

Spring Awakening Rocks Beck’s Main Stage Collaboration brings Baldwin-Wallace Music Theatre Program to Lakewood

In collaboration with Baldwin-Wallace College Music Theatre Program, the Beck Center for the Arts presents the Tony Award-winning rock musical, Spring Awakening, February 3 through March 4, 2012 on the Mackey Main Stage. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are now on sale.

Based on the controversial play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening explores with passion and poignancy the turbulent journey from adolescence to adulthood. This landmark musical swept the 2007 Tony Awards winning eight out of its eleven nominations, including Best Musical and Best Score. With book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, Spring Awakening is an exhilarating mix of morality, sexuality, and rock & roll. This production includes adult language and nudity and is recommended for mature audiences ages 17 and older.

Tickets are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors (65 and older) and $17 for students (with valid ID). An additional $3 service fee per ticket is applied at the time of purchase. Preview Night on Thursday, February 2 is $10 with general admission seating. Group discounts are available for parties of 13 or more. Beck Teen Theater presents Reckless by Craig Lucas
A darkly comic tale of a modern-day Alice in a perilous winter wonderland

Beck Teen Theater presents Reckless by Tony nominated playwright, Craig Lucas in the Studio Theater, February 24 through March 4, 2012. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. Sundays. There is a special 10 a.m. student matinee Thursday, March 1.

Directed by Jonathan Kronenberger, Beck Center’s associate director of theater education, Reckless is an absurdist midwinter night’s dream comedy that features a talented cast of 17 teenage actors who are students at the Beck Center.

At home on Christmas Eve, Rachel is informed by her guilt-ridden husband that he has hired a hit man to kill her. Distraught, she flees for her life by scrambling out the bedroom window and into the snowy night. Rachel’s adventure takes her from town to town where she meets a variety of crazy, colorful characters and encounters an endless series of incredible coincidences.

We have teamed up with the Lake Erie Monsters to educate our community’s teens! The arena will be a buzz as we honor outstanding teen leaders from the Greater Cleveland Area during pregame.
