October Spotlight: Walls Inside/Out

October 3, 2011

Walls Inside/Out, INC.

Walls Inside Out is a non profit organization founded to assist ex-offenders in making a successful reentry to the Greater Cleveland Community.  Incarceration can be a daunting experience.  Lives are changed, oftentimes with negative outcomes.  With some 6,000 ex-offenders returning to the Greater Cleveland Community each year, it is critical that these individuals be exposed to alternatives to:  make changes, eliminate the walls in their lives,

and become productive members of our community once again.

Evangelist Margaret Dua has been dedicated to this concern for some 15 years.  With a faith-based approach, she has worked inside Ohio’s institutions, committed to identifying those who want to change with the “opportunity to change”.  Working outside the institutions, we are committed to breaking down the walls that become true barriers to successful re-entry.

What Walls can provide inside:

–          Pre-release information regarding shelter,

–          Support and connection – oftentimes individuals have been cut-off from families and friends.  Walls can help reconnect forgotten individuals prior to release

–     Create a pre-release plan with those soon to be released that provides

direction as well as options.

–     Instruct those on parole “how to get the most out of their supervision”

What Walls can provide outside:

Referrals to:

–          Social service referrals

–          Medical referrals

–          Dental referrals

–          Addiction referrals

–          Temporary housing (when available)

–          Assistance with transportation

–          Assistance in obtaining identification (state I.D., birth certificate, driver’s license)

–          Benefit Bank review

–          Citizen Circle

–          Employment (when possible)

–          Clothing

AUGUST COLLAB MINUTES

October 1, 2011

Collaborative Meeting Minutes
September 22, 2011 ~ 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Woman’s Club Pavilion, Lakewood Park

Our Mission:
“The Lakewood Family Collaborative is a group of agencies, organizations and concerned individuals working together to make sure a network of services and supports are available and accessible to children, youth and families.”

Program Year 2011-2012 Focus:
“Strengthening the connections between all who live, work and play in our Lakewood”
Goals:  1. Increase membership and awareness within the Lakewood community.
2. Motivate members to participate in Collaborative activities.
3. Educate members on how to connect and reach out amongst each other for information, ideas and general support.

Lunch and Welcome – All enjoyed a delightful lunch that was catered by Toni Gelsomino.  After lunch, Bruce Chamberlin welcomed everyone and introduced the mayor of Lakewood, Mike Summers.  Mayor Summers gave a brief speech in which he affirmed cooperation, highlighting three avenues of cooperation: shared services, collaboration, and regionalization.

Collaborative Spotlight and Discussion – Jeff Patterson, Superintendent, Lakewood City Schools – Mr. Patterson spoke about the success of the Lakewood School District, whose performance has gone up over the years and most recently received a rating of EXCELLENT.  The long-term vision for Lakewood City Schools is to be among the top 20 school districts in the state by 2020.  Some of the challenges the school faces are: high number of new students that enroll each year, potential additional funding cuts, various sub-groups that are within the district such as Economically Disadvantaged, Limited English Proficient, and Students with Disabilities.  The discussion centered around the question of what do we need to do in order to reach this status of being one of the top schools.  Some suggestions were:  quicker identification of student’s needs, more counseling available and assessments for families, peace-builders program in every school, increase in school nurses, increased parental engagement, organized after-school program, better collaboration with local businesses, and free pre-kindergarten.

Introductions – Everyone introduced the person to their right.

School in the Cinema

October 1, 2011

Friends of Lakewood Library and Lakewood Council of PTAs presents School in the Cinema, a film series about education in the United States and around the world.  The documentary films examine education from several points of view.  We hope the series is thought provoking and generates conversations about education in Lakewood and the world beyond.

“Two Million Minutes” is October’s film.  It will show Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. in Lakewood Public Library’s Main Auditorium.  “Two Million Minutes” refers to the time between the last day of eighth grade and the first day of college, the time our children have to prepare themselves intellectually for what has become a global competition.  Six students from India, China and the U.S. are featured, giving us a glimpse of how these countries’ vary in preparing their young for the future.

The film series will continue in November and January, keep reading your Collab Newsletter for more information!
