Our Mission:

“The Lakewood Family Collaborative is a group of agencies, organizations and concerned individuals working together to make sure a network of services and supports are available and accessible to children, youth and families.”

2011 Focus“Building and strengthening relationships in order to increase participation

for the betterment of Lakewood families and the community.”

All were welcomed by Bruce Chamberlin and each table was asked to utilize the blocks and sticky notes on their table to construct a community, showing those components of successful community building.  After enjoying a lunch catered by Karen King, each table was asked to describe their thoughts on successful community and collaborative building and their descriptive words on the sticky notes were displayed at the front of the room.

Collaborative Spotlight & DiscussionRick Oliver from Mobil Crisis – spoke about his agency which is available 24/7 and is 100% free (funded by ADAMHS Board) for uninsured with mental health problems including depression, anxiety and psychotic disorders as well as suicide awareness and prevention.  They assess when the call comes in, using basic counseling skills and offer referrals to a wide variety of mental health resources in the community; they go out and do assessments doing 10 face-to-face a day, however, they do not do emergency response; they authorize admissions for children to a psych ward.  Cuyahoga County has not see an increase in elderly and under 18 suicide calls.  Middle age while males (3 – 55) are the major problem.  Funding changes are taking place as of July 1st and they are waiting to hear from the State to see if there will be any funding changes.

Recognition and Installation – Collaborative members were thanked and outgoing Leadership Team members were recognized and presented with plaques.

The incoming Leadership Team was introduced and each was asked to remove two sticky notes from the display representing their areas of interest for the next year, then they were and installed by Mary Hall.  Your LT for the 2011-2012 year are as follows:

Men Taking Children to School

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

The Fathers Walk Committee encourages fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, godfathers, cousins, and other significant male caregivers to take their children to school on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, for the 2011-2012 school year.   Men who support the Fathers Walk should arrive with their children at the school 15 to 30 minutes before the starting bell.  When men are involved in the educational lives of their children, children perform better in school.

Employers are asked to allow fathers and other male caregivers to take off from work to accompany their children to school and help get the school year started right.  Fathers and other men should be welcomed guests at their children’s school.  Some schools will have information and activities available.  Fathers and other men will only go into schools if school staff invites them in.  Otherwise, they will leave after their children enter the building.

Additionally, we encourage men to make a year-long special commitment to:

  • Improve their work and life skills
  • Acquire more education for themselves and become a role model for their children
  • Support their children financially, spiritually and emotionally
  • Dedicate themselves to their family
  • Build, clean and maintain their community
  • Become entrepreneurs and develop economic resources

Please print and your organization will be added to the list of 2011 participants:

New Superintendent for Lakewood City Schools

August 30, 2011

Jeffrey W. Patterson took over the reins of the Lakewood City Schools as Superintendent on Aug. 1 of this year after having spent five years as Assistant Superintendent for the district of nearly 6,000 students. It was a natural transition for the longtime educator who has worked at all levels of education
from elementary through high school to administration.

When Patterson graduated from the University of Akron in 1974 with his bachelor’s degree, his first job out of school was as a high school social studies teacher in a tiny (about 600 students) district in Richland County. The school district was so small that he was a one-man Social Studies department who
also had to pitch in as the varsity baseball coach, JV basketball coach, junior high football coach and Student Council advisor and eventually became Dean of Students. It was his first taste of what it was like to have his hands in many different aspects of a school district.

Hailing from Ashland, Ohio, Patterson remained in Richland County for the first two decades of his career. His career has included positions as principal at Crestview High School and Ashland Middle School, assistant superintendent for Ashland City School District, an elementary consultant for Richland
County Schools, then assistant superintendent and finally superintendent for Orrville City School District for 6 ½ years before being hired as assistant superintendent for secondary and alternative schools for Lakewood in August 2006.

It was no easy decision for Patterson and his wife, who is a computer teacher at Garfield Middle
School, to leave the part of Ohio they had spent most of their lives in to relocate to Northeast Ohio. As
superintendent in Orrville, he had just finished shepherding through a district-wide school construction
plan that involved a great deal of community engagement and a successful bond issue campaign.
Lakewood was about to embark on its own master facilities plan and Patterson knew of Lakewood’s
reputation for community involvement.

“It was a great opportunity to come to a larger community that was very invested in engaging its
citizens,” said Patterson, who lives in Lakewood.

In his six years with Lakewood Schools, Patterson has been part of team that has seen student
achievement steadily rise, helped implement the Lakewood City Academy alternative and digital
learning school and integrated new technological tools into classroom instruction.

No matter what crosses his desk as Superintendent of Lakewood Schools, Patterson believes that with
an “excellent staff that is very focused on students” in conjunction with a spirit of cooperation between
the staff, the Board of Education and the community, Lakewood will continue to be a successful school
district.

Patterson and his wife, Nancy, have three grown children and enjoy spending time at a home they have
on Kelley’s Island in their free time. Earlier in his career, Patterson was a fast-pitch softball player who
was a member of teams that won several state titles and one was a national title runner-up.

Recess ROCKS!

August 30, 2011

Our 2nd Annual Recess ROCKS! event is right around the corner.  I encourage you to register your company or organization to participate if you have not already done so.  Recess ROCKS! is a great event that lets you promote your company or organization to more than 3000 people.

~ The deadline for registering is September 2nd to ensure placement on literature.

~ Late entries are welcome but cannot be guaranteed placement on printed material.

Please see below for details and entry information;

Jordan’s Family Foundation’s 2nd Annual Recess ROCKS! will take place on Sunday, September 25th from 1 – 5pm.  The event turns Lakewood Park (near Cleveland, Ohio) into a large playground and feature dozens of energizing activities for kids and families to have fun and play while also learning a bit about healthy living.

Our inaugural event last year was attended by more than 2000 guests with over 50 organizations (including the Cleveland CAVS, Cleveland Indians, American Heart Association, Cleveland Clinic and many others) participating in the fun.  The event will give elementary and middle school aged kids an opportunity to commit to better health through games and activities while offering parents a host of new ideas for keeping the whole family healthy.

We are seeking your organization’s participation and support in our efforts of making this a successful community event.  If your organization would like to become involved and have a presence at our event with a product demonstration and/or booth display, we would like to have you join in the fun (see attachment).

Recess ROCKS! is a heart-healthy and activity-based event and just one way Jordan’s Family Foundation is fighting childhood obesity, which in turn, can lead to heart disease.  We are estimating approximately 3000 – 3500 children, along with their families, will take part in the event.

All those in attendance will be given a large menu of options for their day at the “playground” ranging from physical challenges and sports to educational information and nutrition.  A portion of Lakewood Park will be divided into activity stations where each station provides an opportunity to quickly engage kids in healthy activities while not detracting from the real purpose of the day – playing.   There will also be informational booths set up throughout the event to distribute promotional material about your organization and healthy living.

Ultimately, the goal of Recess ROCKS! is to create a fun environment for families to learn about healthy living and for kids to make a commitment to be healthy while having fun with other kids in the community.

I look forward to working with you in planning and executing Recess ROCKS! presented by Jordan’s Family Foundation.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

**Please complete and return this form by September 2, 2011.
